I recently looked it up, and learned that the point of the movie is that Teddy really is crazy. But some things I don't understand. If you think he's sane consider this. "Chuck" his partner can't get the gun out of his holster in the beginning, what kind of US Marshall doesn't know how to take out a gun? Also when he met Dr. Solando in the cave, she said "You're that Marshall." She lives in a cave and has no contact with the outside world, proving she is a figment of his imagination. Also I haven't seen the movie in a while, so I could be getting these things wrong, but this is what I don't get. 1.Why are there two lighthouses? In the first search of the movie there's a lighthouse on the cliff, then later there's on the beach. 2.What's with the rats before he meets "Dr. Solando?" Is that a symptom of schizophrenia or something? 3.If it's all fake, why does his story of "That guy from Ward C(i forgot his name) match up with what he says? ex. Get off shutter island once, not twice, never twice. This implies he did get out and beg not to go back because of experiments. 4. When they found Rachel Solando, she says "My Jim's dead." while just before she says she sent him off to work. I don't understand that at all. Why did she pretend to be crazy, then say Lenny was Jim, then say Lennie wasn't Jim? 5. In the paper found in Solando's cell, it says "Rule of 4." Then once Lenny is revealed to be crazy, the names are similar because of the "Rule of 4." How do these connect?
